We train professionals to: work one-to-one with families to build attachment and positive parenting behaviours; strengthen parent-child interaction within the Early Home Learning Environment; support school readiness.

Mission

Parents as First Teachers promotes the optimal early development, learning, and health of children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers.

CORE VALUES

  • Parents are their children’s first and most influential teachers.

  • The early years of a child’s life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school life.

  • Established and emerging research findings should be the foundation of parent education and family support, curricula, training, materials and services.

  • All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of any demographic, geographic, or economic considerations.

  • An understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions of diverse cultures is essential in serving families.

  • Our goal is to provide leadership, education and support for the implementation of high-quality programmes that enable parents to become their children’s best first teachers.

APPROACH

The Parents as First Teachers approach is to partner, facilitate and reflect. We do this at every level of our organisation, from a parent educator visiting a family in their home, all the way to the work of the international centre.
